ROMANIA ~ The Church of Ieud Deal - Maramures - UNESCO ~

... Lovely view of an Orthodox church set on a small hill on the shores of the Ighişor stream surrounded by an old cemetery.... this church is considered to be the oldest wooden church in in Maramureş... an architectural jewel... made of thick wooden logs... the church is dedicated to the birth of the Virgin Mary... with colorful and detailed well-preserved murals covering the entire surface of the church... the most characteristic features are the tall tower above the entrance and the massive roof that seems to dwarf the main body of the church... this ancient country with almost 100 such monuments made of wood gives an insight of  the magnificent talent of Maramures people, tradition and culture over the years... Thanks Calin!【ツ】

Maramureș County is situated in the northern part of Romania, and has a border with Ukraine.

The Church of  Ieud Deal was probably built around 1620 by the local noblemen of the Balea family.
It is a large church, measuring 7.15 m in width and 11.87 m in length.

Eight wooden Churches of Maramures  - in Surdesti, Plopis, Rogoz, Ieud, Poeinile Izei, Barsana, Budesti and Desesti - have been recognized by UNESCO in 1999.
