Split is the second largest city in Croatia (after Zagreb), and the largest city in the region known as the Dalmatian Coast on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea.
Split down town was originally built around the Diocletian palace a mansion house built for the retired Roman emperor Diocletian, where the local population sought refuge centuries ago.
In 1979, the historic center of Split was included into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
