Fiji is an island nation belonging to the Polynesian islands located in Melanesia, a subregion of Oceania. It shares marine boundaries with Vanuatu, New Caledonia (France), Kermadec (New Zealand), Tonga, American Samoa, Tuvalu, Samoa and Wallis and Futuna (France). The capital and largest city is Suva, on the island of Viti Levu. Fiji gained independence from the British Empire in 1970 after 96 years as a British colony.

There are over 330 islands in Fiji and over 500 small islets. Around 110 of these islands are inhabited, although 87% of the population lives on the two biggest islands Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. The islands are spread over 194,000 km²  of which just 10% is land.
