The Gulf of Fonseca is a sheltered inlet of the Pacific Ocean, bounded by El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. It reaches inland for approximately 65 km and covers an area of about 1,800 square km.

The Gulf was first seen by Europeans in 1522. A Spanish explorer named Gil González Dávila discovered it. He named the gulf after his boss, Juan Rodríguez de Fonseca, who was an archbishop.

The tentative list entry specifically refers to the sites within El Salvador's territory.
