Construction of the building started in 1732 and was completed in 1748. The tower on top was added later, and was completed in 1753. It was built to serve as the colonial legislature for the then British Province of Pennsylvania.
In 1776, the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence here. Eleven years later, in the same room, delegates to the Constitutional Convention created and signed an enduring framework of government - the United States Constitution.
The Independence Hall is the centerpiece of the Independence National Historical Park, and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
