Situated in the southeast of Iran, Kerman is Iran’s largest province. Bam was built in 5th century BC, and it encloses several important structures within itself.
The area of Bam Citadel is approximately 180,000km2, and it is surrounded by gigantic walls 6–7m high and 1,815m long. The citadel consists of four main sections: a residential zone, the stables, the army barracks and the governor’s residence. Arg-e-Bam had 38 watchtowers, four entrance gates and the outer defense wall is surrounded by a moat. The Government Quarters are on a rocky hill, protected by a double fortification wall.
Bam’s aged earthen architecture and its development as an important trade center as a part of the silk road from the 7thC to the 11thC, are the reasons why Bam is one of the oldest cities inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage sites list since 2004.
