IRAN ~ Bam Citadel - Kerman - UNESCO ~

... Amazing view of the largest mud brick structure in the world situated in a vast desert plateau... it houses homes for ordinary people to higher class society... unfortunately, it was mostly destroyed in the 2003 Bam Earthquake.. but it has been renovated... with 99% of reconstruction complete as of 2018 with a breathtaking life-size sandcastle towering over a desert oasis it is a site you just cannot miss in Iran... a city about 6000 years old so you will walk within the Persian history...  Bam citadel is one of the most important and valuable historical masterpieces of Iran and an exceptional testimony to the development of a trading settlement in the desert... Thanks a lot Eshan!【ツ】

Situated in the southeast of Iran, Kerman is Iran’s largest province. Bam was built in 5th century BC, and it encloses several important structures within itself.

The area of Bam Citadel is approximately 180,000km2, and it is surrounded by gigantic walls 6–7m  high and 1,815m long. The citadel consists of four main sections: a residential zone, the stables, the army barracks and the governor’s residence. Arg-e-Bam had 38 watchtowers, four entrance gates and the outer defense wall is surrounded by a moat. The Government Quarters are on a rocky hill, protected by a double fortification wall.

Bam’s aged earthen architecture and its development as an important trade center as a part of the silk road from the 7thC to the 11thC, are the reasons why Bam is one of the oldest cities inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage sites list since 2004.
