GERMANY ~ State Museum - Mainz ~

... Nice view of one of the oldest museums in the country... this perfectly renovated State Museum houses an important art and cultural history collection covering a long period... from the Stone Age to the present day and is a real gem... the Baroque building known as the "Golden-Ross-Kaserne" or the "Golden Steed Barracks" and the contemporary steel and glass wing opening towards the courtyard together with the electoral stables form the charming heart of the museum... this unique baroque architectural ensemble was previously the large horse stables of the Elector of Mainz... numerous special exhibitions on present and past art enrich the wide range of offers... Thanks Dustin!【ツ】

The museum has its roots in a painting collection donated by Napoleon and Chaptal to the city of Mainz in 1803. It was Napoleon Bonaparte who left the city the so-called “French Bequest”: 36 paintings which the revolutionary troops had confiscated elsewhere.

It moved into its current location in 1937, by which time it had grown significantly. It received its present name in 1986, and was renovated and modernised from 2004 to 2010. In March 2010 it reopened in full after an extensive renovation.
