GERMANY ~ Cathedral - Cologne - UNESCO ~

... Lovely view of the impressive cathedral and the Hohenzollern bridge over the Rhine river at night...   probably Germany's most known religious structure that includes two huge towers that serve as the defining symbol of Cologne's skyline... the Cathedral was under construction for over 600 years... the highest twin-spired church in the world and the second tallest church in Europe... the South Tower of the Dom boasts the largest swinging bell in the world... the Saint Peter bell can be seen if you walk the 533 steps up to the top of the Tower and weighs a staggering 24 tonnes... the bell only tolls on special occasions such as New Year’s Day and Christmas Day... the platform of the southern tower provides visitors with a fantastic view from a height of about 97 meters... it is Germany’s most visited landmark and boasts around 20,000 visitors a day... Thanks Melanie!【ツ】

Cologne is located on both sides of the Rhine, near Germany's borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. It is Germany’s fourth-largest city and one of the oldest cities in the country. It is the historic, cultural, and economic hub of the Rhineland, and one of Europe's most important inland ports.

In 1248, the construction of the Cathedral was started. Until 1560 the work on this Gothic Cathedral was in progress, but an accumulation of problems prevented it to be finished. Only during the 19thC the Cathedral was finally completed, stimulated by Emperor William I. Not anymore as a pure construction to honor God, but also as a national Prussian symbol.

It was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1996.
