The Würzburg Residence was commissioned by Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn. the prince-bishop of Wurzburg.
The lead architect was Balthasar Neumann, who rose to fame during the years of the Residence’s construction. The shell of the palace was built from 1720 to 1744 and the interior completed in 1780. The extensive ceiling frescoes were the work of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
The Wurzburg Residence with the Court Gardens and Residence Square Würzburg was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1981.
