GERMANY ~ Walhalla - Donaustauf ~

... Lovely views of a unique and impressive Greek inspired white marble temple... an amazing memorial to Germany's best and brightest... it displays some 65 plaques and 130 busts covering 2,000 years of  German history.... this building really is beautiful, both on the outside and the inside...  it is located on a forested hill with a gorgeous view of the valley, the Danube river and all the way to Regensburg... it is said that it is one of Germany's most important national monuments of the 19thC... a popular day-trip and cruise destination from Regensburg... with nice stamp and special postmark👍 celebrating the archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann’s 200th birthday... Thanks Dustin!ヽ(ヅ)ノ

The Walhalla was built by Ludwig's I favourite architect, Leo von Klenze, one of the most important Neoclassical architects of the 19thC. The foundation stone was laid in 1830 and the building was ceremoniously opened twelve years later, on 18 October 1842.

"Walhalla" was inspired by Valhöll (in English usually Valhalla), the hall of the slain where heroes who had died in battle would join the god Odin according to Norse mythology.
