GERMANY ~ Palace Arkades - Brunswick ~

... Great Braunschweig view nr 2... from the front, this Neoclassical building is an amazing example of a huge castle in the centre of the city... but in fact it's only the façade of the former palace of the Braunschweig Herzogs... it was damaged beyond repair during WWII and was completely demolished in 1960... then the façade was restored  in the early 2000's using parts of original stone and columns......and an aultra-modern big shopping mall over three floors was built right behind it, inaugurated in 2007... it also houses the library and other city council offices... there's a small museum recreating living quarters of the dukes... shopping centre and history combined... with great clear "Leap Day" postmark👍... Thanks a lot dear Dustin!✿◕ ‿ ◕✿ must be really nice living in a town steeped in history!🙂

The Braunschweiger Schloss was designed by Hermann Korb and was built 1717-1791. Between 1754 and 1918, it served as residence of the Dukes of Brunswick. The palace burned down during the unsuccessful revolution of 1830. It was re-built under the direction of Carl Theodor Ottmer and completed in 1841.

The statue on top is the Quadriga – a chariot drawn by four horses – with as the triumphant woman Brunonia, the symbolic national goddess of the Duchy and the Free State of Brunswick.
