GERMANY ~ Burgplatz - The Lion City of Brunswick ~

... First of two more lovely postcards showing the most famous sights in Dustins home town💜... Burgplatz (Castle Square) is the oldest part of the city comprised of a group of buildings of great historical and cultural importance... a square in the city center surrounded by at leats 500 years of history... it  includes the Romanesque St. Blasius' Cathedral, the Burg Dankwarderode (a 19thC reconstruction of the old castle of Henry the Lion), the Neo-Gothic Town Hall and other beautiful half-timbered structures that still shows evidence of its medieval ground plan... despite the widespread bombing suffered during the WWII Braunschweig’s monuments  have been restored  in the original style... so the place still looks medieval... also known as the "Lion City" for its magnificent 12thC bronze lion and the best-known landmark in the city... this replica has been here since 1989, while the original is in Burg Dankwarderode to protect it from the elements... dated 20-02-2020🙂... Thanks a lot Dustin!【ツ】

Braunschweig (also known as Brunswick) is located in Lower Saxony north of the Harz mountains and is the largest city between Berlin and Hanover.

Legend says that it was founded about 861 by Bruno, son of Duke Ludolf of Saxony, but it probably originated at a much later date. It was chartered and improved by Henry the Lion, duke of Saxony, in the 12thC and became a leading member of the Hanseatic League in the 13thC.

The town's original name of Brunswik is a combination of the name Bruno and Low German wik, a place where merchants rested and stored their good Another explanation of the city's name is that it comes from Brand, or burning, indicating a place which developed after the landscape was cleared through burning.
