GERMANY ~ Wartburg Castle - Eisenach - UNESCO ~

... Although damaged😟 during its journey it is still a great fortress view... one of the best-preserved medieval German fortresses... large, imposing and steeped in 1000 years of history... a hilltop castle rises 410 m above the town of Eisenach in the former communist East Germany with beautiful vistas... the first German castle to be designated a UNESCO WHS site... it was here that Martin Luther translated  the New Testament into German during his long months of hiding... a museum on the castle grounds displays art treasures collected over centuries, including tapestries, medieval musical instruments and valuable silverware... many events, from the Summer Nights festival to theatre and the historical Christmas market, attract visitors from around the world and bring the ancient walls to life... with great matching stamp👍... Thanks a lot Sabine!【ツ】

According to legend, it was founded in 1067, and its history can be traced back to the times of the Landgraves of Thuringia.

The surviving 12thC main castle building, a perfect example late Romanesque architecture, still bears traces of its former glory. The building underwent restoration and redecoration in the 19thC when the medieval architecture was restored and supplemented in parts with historically informed new constructions.

Over the centuries, the castle fell into disuse and deterioration. It wasn’t until the mid-1950s that extensive reconstruction took place inside the castle.
