HONDURAS ~ Mayaan Ruins of Copan - UNESCO ~

... Wonderful view of one of the most important and spectacular cities of the ancient Maya civilization... especially known for the well preserved fine stone carvings and stellae that are unique to this site... the entire ruin site includes more than 4,500 structures... probably the highlight of the site from an archaeological point of view is the hieroglyphic staircase... it is the longest pre-Columbian hieroglyphic inscription in the Americas... there are over 2,000 hieroglyphics on 63 steps... at the entrance of Copan you can find the Mayan museum that includes many sculptures and replicas from the site.... located in an unbelievably lush valley and the surrounding areas are amazing... it is easy to spot a variety of resident animals that roam around the ruins... monkeys, guacamayas, macaws, sloths, and peccaries, among others... the site is also a macaw sanctuary... Big thanks once more Cesar!(✿ ♥‿♥)

Copan is an archaeological site of the Maya civilization in Copan Ruinas (the name of the town, as opposed to Ruinas de Copan, the name of the ruins) in western Honduras, not far from the border with Guatemala. The site comprises some 100 hectares, including residential areas. Its central district covers 22 hectares.

The Mayan civilization’s most prominent royal city of all, Copan was inhabited for 2,000 years and was the eminent capital between the 5th and 9thC AD. At its peak, in what is known as the Mayan ‘classical period’, Xukpi, as the city was known, was home for more than 20,000 people.

Even though Copan was well known since the early 19th century, it wasn’t until 1975 that excavations began –still ongoing– to uncover the mysteries behind the history of this lost city.

The site was added to the World Heritage List in 1980.
