Located in the heart of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and to the south by the Caribbean Sea. The country is the second largest in the Caribbean region.
The capital is Santo Domingo founded in 1496, is the oldest European settlement in the Western Hemisphere.
Christopher Columbus explored and claimed the island on his first voyage in 1492, it became a springboard for Spanish conquest of the Caribbean and the American mainland.
