Polonnaruwa is the second most ancient city of Sri Lanka's kingdoms and the first declared capital city by King Vijayabahu I. Today the ancient city of Polonnaruwa remains one of the best planned archeological relic sites in the country, showing the grandeur of the first rulers.
Alahana Pirivena is a monastery complex and a university for buddhism (extending over an area of 80 hectares) built by King Parakramabahu I (1153 -1186 AD)

The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1982.
