Lake Baikal in eastern Siberia is the deepest lake in the world with a maximum depth of 1,632m, 640km long and judging by it size only it would be more of a sea than a lake. There are 26 islands on the lake, the largest being Olkhon Island. Baikal is also the world's most ancient freshwater lake, it originated 20-25 million years ago. In the winter, the place completely freezes over, which means there are no lake ferries. Instead, you can drive across the ice!

Lake Baikal was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996.
