Angkor Archaeological Park, stretching over some 400 km2 including forested area. It contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the famous temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations.
It signifies an earthly representation of Mount Meru, the ancient Hindu Gods home and sacred five-peaked mountain of Hindu cosmology – symbolised by five conical spires. Unlike other Angkor temples, Angkor Wat wasn’t abandoned to the elements and continued as a significant religious centre. This, along with its vast moat keeping the encroaching jungle at bay, may explain why it has remained remarkably well preserved.
UNESCO inscribed Ta Prohm on the World Heritage List in 1992.
