Blue Mountains National Park is located in New South Wales with an area of 267,954 hectares and was established in 1959. The park is a high, rugged sandstone plateau dominated by a landscape of eucalyptus forests and carved by deep river gorges. The surface terrain is roughly 300 million years old, with underlying rock layers dating back 470 million years.  It supports hundreds of species of native animals, including koalas, kangaroos, and the rare Wollemi Pine. Aboriginal peoples, including the Gundungurra and Darug Nations, have lived in the region for over 22,000 years.

The Greater Blue Mountains Area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
