The land came into the possession of the Festetics family in 1739 and the construction of the Baroque castle began in 1745. After several renovations, it acquired its present form between 1883 and 1887, during the reign of Festetics II in neo-baroque and neo-rococo style based on the designs of Victor Rumpelmayer. The building is the most intact preserved Hungarian castle in terms of both its interior and furnishings. The castle park was designed by the English garden designer Henry Ernest Milner in the 1880s, with a renovated pond, the Lion's Well and fountains, and the Princess's Chamber Garden
Festetics Castle is included on Hungary's UNESCO Tentative List as part of the broader Balaton Uplands Cultural Landscape nomination
