Nice view of a human-made tropical rainforest established on degraded tin-mining land from the 1920s... spanning 589ha it also includes the campus grounds of Malaysia’s oldest forestry research institute, more commonly referred to with its acronym ‘FRIM’ by locals... originally comprising just the forest and the on-site colonial-era forestry quarters and offices, FRIM has since grown to encompass broader botanical research, hosting a herbarium, biotechnology research and horticulture, with public-facing facilities for forestry education... it is the oldest and largest re-created tropical rainforest in the world and famous for the "rivers of light" formed by crown shyness... "Crown shyness" is a fascinating natural phenomenon where the uppermost branches and leaves of neighboring trees stop growing to avoid touching each other... this creates narrow, puzzle-like gaps in the forest canopy that look like glowing rivers of sky or light...
