Terceira is one of the 9 islands within the Portuguese Autonomous Region of the Azores, an archipelago of Portugal in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the larger islands and home to Azores' oldest city Angra do Heroismo. It was an important island on the maritime trade route between Europe and North America, which contributed to its development. The island is in fact an active volcanic island, that is composed of several older extinct volcanoes. 

 It was classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1983.
