The Maspalomas Dunes, a 400-hectare Special Nature Reserve form a dynamic, moving desert landscape composed of organic sand from shell remnants and marine erosion.
Declared a protected area in 1987, the system consists of three distinct ecosystems—a palm grove, a salty lagoon, and shifting, wind-swept sand dunes reaching up to 15–20 meters high.
The reserve includes a 6-km beach, a natural palm grove (palmeral), and 'La Charca,' a salt water pond serving as a habitat for local wildlife and migratory birds.
