SPAIN ~ Maspalomas Dunes - Gran Canaria ~

... Beautiful views of a desert by the ocean... one of the islands’ most spectacular landscapes... the dunes seem to stretch for miles... home to a magnificent beach that blends into the Atlantic ocean... dreamy golden sand dunes, a palm tree forest and a salt water lagoon... the look of the vast sea of sand in San Bartolomé de Tirajana at the south of Gran Canaria transforms with every gust of wind... this beautiful ecosystem is truly awe-inspiring... to protect the fragile environment, walking is officially permitted only on marked paths, as pedestrian traffic disrupts the sand's natural movement and damages flora... the area is a major tourist attraction for hiking and photography... Thanks a lot Loes en Ben!ヽ(•‿•)ノ

The Maspalomas Dunes, a 400-hectare Special Nature Reserve form a dynamic, moving desert landscape composed of organic sand from shell remnants and marine erosion.

Declared a protected area in 1987, the system consists of three distinct ecosystems—a palm grove, a salty lagoon, and shifting, wind-swept sand dunes reaching up to 15–20 meters high.

The reserve includes a 6-km beach, a natural palm grove (palmeral), and 'La Charca,' a salt water pond serving as a habitat for local wildlife and migratory birds.
