Aqaba is situated at the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba, it borders Israel, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. The city has a rich history that dating back to 4,000 BC. The ancient Egyptians, Romans, and even the Nabateans, who built the famous city of Petra, lived in or passed through here. In the 7th century, Aqaba became an important Islamic port. During World War I, this city was the site of a significant battle when Arab forces, led by T.E. Lawrence, captured it from the Ottoman Empire.
Aqaba Marine Reserve was submitted in 2023 to the UNESCO Tentative List.
