GERMANY ~ Völklingen - Saarland - UNESCO ~

... Nice views of a town known for its industrial past... Völklingen Ironworks site is a closed-down ironworks from the time of industrialisation and has remained completely intact... it is considered one of the most important industrial monuments in the world... nowadays, it serves fully as a museum... there are plenty of parts here where you can just walk around and explore and really feel the size and scope of this massive industrial factory....there are more than 6 kilometres of pathways that you can follow... climbing various staircases up to the viewing platform and looking out across the site is a must... the Visitor Centre tells visitors the history of the ironworks and how all the different machines used to work...  the site is very well maintained, and parts of it are rented out to local artists to use as workshops... Thanks a lot Marcel! (•‿•)

Völklingen is a town in the district of Saarbrücken, in Saarland.

The Völklingen Ironworks represent a modern ironmaking plant from the 19th and 20th centuries. The plant was closed in 1986 and its historic fabric shows that it will have been run for many decades before that on an “essential maintenance” basis only.

At Völklingen Ironworks, several important technological innovations in the production of pig-iron were developed or first applied successfully on an industrial scale. The entire process of pig iron production was executed here. Most of the installations, including blast furnaces, coke ovens, and gas-blowing engines, have been authentically preserved.

Völklingen Ironworks site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
