The Pirin Mountain in south-west Bulgaria, reach 2,900 meters high. In order to protect the rich wildlife in the mountain the Vihren National Park was created in 1962, which was renamed Pirin National Park in 1975. 

The Vlahini Lakes is a group of four lakes in Pirin. The lakes are named after the village of Vlahi, located at much lower altitude.

The World Heritage property covers an area of around 40,000 ha in the Pirin Mountains and overlaps with the undeveloped areas of Pirin National Park. It was added to the World Heritage List in 1983.
