... Nice view of a Serbian Orthodox church (the East side)... considered as the oldest intact church in Serbia and one of the oldest in the region with a great religious, architectural and cultural value... located on a tranquil hill in Ras the former capital of medieval Serbia... above the city of Nova Pazar... it has been the site of many archaeological excavations and valuable items have been found here... apart from being a religious object, it is also partly a museum, which has many artefacts which date centuries ago... interestingly, this area today is almost completely Muslim... Thanks a lot Laco!【ツ】
Dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, the church was founded in the 4thC during Roman rule, while additions were made in the 7th and 9thC, after which it served as the ecclesiastical seat of the Serbian church, and as the baptismal church and state council site of the Nemanjić dynasty, until the last years of the 12thC.
As part of the larger Old Ras medieval complex, the church was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979, which includes the nearby monasteries of Sopoćani and Đurđevi Stupovi, as well as the fortress of Old Ras.
Definitives
