ROMANIA ~ Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania - UNESCO ~

... Nice views of a few of the Fortified churches (built within sets of walls, with towers and vaults and food storage) in Transylvania...  always built in the centre of town, and usually strategically placed on hilltops and date from the 13th to the 16thC... they hold a big historical and cultural value and are typical for this very region... some of these fortifications stand out with their old paintings, legends, fabulous landscape, history lessons and religiousness... these churches form one of the densest, well preserved, medieval fortification system in Europe... today, only half of the initial 300 churches still stand, and 7 of them are included in the list of UNESCO WHS sites... Thanks a lot Catalina! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Transylvania is a large region of current-day Romania, which used to belong to Hungary. These villages with fortified churches were built by the Transylvanian Saxons. These Saxons were ethnic Germans, and began settling the area in the 12thC, with the aim of securing the area of Transylvania for the Holy Roman Empire.

In 1993, Biertan was the first fortified church to be inscribed in UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites, and the other 6 were added to the list in 1999. The following six former Saxon villages and one Székely village comprise this WHS: Biertan, Câlnic, Dârjiu, Prejmer, Saschiz, Valea Viilor, and Viscri.
