Jaffna is the capital city of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka and is known for its predominant Tamil population and recognized as the cultural capital for Tamilians in Sri Lanka.
Jaffna has a unique and complex identity influenced by a multiplicity of traditions. It is an expression of the Portuguese, Dutch and British histories in the country with the Tamil, Sinhala and Muslim identities with gopurams rising to the skies next to quaint churches along streets that flaunt the splendour of Dutch and British residences.
