Rumpelstiltskin, German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm for their Grimm’s Fairy Tales (1812–22).

The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859), were German scholars, linguists, cultural researchers, lexicographers and authors who together collected and published folk stories.

Rumpelstiltskin is the villain in this fairy tale.  He is an imp-like creature who makes trades with people in desperate situations; one of them with a miller's daughter who is supposed to be able to spin hay into gold. She promises him her firstborn child if he helps her.
