... Great aerial view of a perfect example of Bavarian rococo architecture.... a little white church located in the rolling green fields of the Bavarian countryside with the peaks of the Alps in the background... the Wieskirche was built in Bavaria after a wooden statue of Jesus was apparently seen weeping tears on the site... it quickly became a pilgrimage destination and has attracted worshippers ever since... more than 1 million tourists visit the small village of Wies each year... they are all amazed by the magnificent highly elaborated interior art works... with extensive ceiling fresco in lively colours and richly decorated chancel with pulpit... Thanks Rafal! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
In the mid-18thC the current church was built by the Zimmermann brothers, who were local artists and architects whose work in this period can be found all over Europe and ordered by the monks of the monastery of Steingade. The Pilgrimage Church of Wies is located between Steingaden and Wildsteig.
The church was renovated in the 1980s to safeguard the original decoration and to bring the design more in line with the concepts of the artists at the time.
The Wieskirche was admitted on the UNESCO World Culture Heritage List in 1983.
