.... Wonderful aerial castle view in a picture perfect setting... even though its size is rather small, medieval Muiderslot Castle is one of the oldest, best preserved and most beautiful castles in the Netherlands... its Middle Age architecture, gorgeous gardens, pastoral setting, and fascinating historical exhibits makes it a must-visit attraction... you’ll find several rooms that have been restored to look exactly as they did in the 17thC... the views from the watch tower are magnificent... also the gardens today are kept exactly as they would have been back then with authentic heirloom vegetables and the same herbs and plants that made up the 17thC diet.. Thanks a lot Karin! (✿ ♥‿♥)
Muiderslot Castle was constructed in the late 13thC by Floris the fifth, count of Holland. When he was murdered in 1296 his castle was destroyed as well, but in 1370 the original Muiderslot was restored and expanded with a residential wing. Later on, in the 18thC, the castle was used as a prison. Since 1878 the castle serves as a national museum.
The name Muiderslot is derived from the German word “mui” which means mouth. The castle got this name because it is situated at the mouth of river Vecht.
Muiderslot Castle is part of the UNESCO-listed Defence Line of Amsterdam. (1996-2021)
