"The heart of Darkness of East Germany"... you can visit his offices which are preserved in the original state and form the centrepiece of this historic site... the Stasi Museum Berlin brings alive the terror lived by GDR’s residents for 41 years before the Berlin Wall fell... during that period, Erich Mielke ordered the abuse of a large number of citizens of the Eastern part of Germany.. fear was key to the efficiency of the Stasi, and Mielke was the master of fear... inside the musuem walls a visitor is reminded why the Stasi secret police force of former East Germany was one of the most feared agencies in Europe... with nice special First day postmark... The Stasi Museum is located in the Lichtenberg locality of Berlin, in the former headquarters of the Stasi. Its bureaucracy was enormous. By the time the Berlin Wall fell, its headquarters in Berlin covered 22 hectares with 50 office buildings where 7000 people worked.
The museum is operated by the Antistalinistische Aktion Berlin-Normannenstraße (ASTAK), which was founded by civil rights activists in Berlin in 1990. It aims to foster the development of the museum as a centre for the collection, preservation, documentation, rehabilitation and exhibition of evidence and research materials relating to East Germany.
