... Nice view of the monumental entrance, the famous Königshalle... the building is a well preserved and architectural gem with an impressive beautiful ornate facade... this Abbey was one of the most renowned monasteries of the Carolingian Empire... and they are among the most important pre-Romanesque–Carolingian style buildings in Germany... the whole complex has been transformed into opened stylish modern lawn park forming a straight vista between the Gatehouse and the Church... the Gatehouse also contains fine Carolingian frescoes... with great matching stamp!👍 Thanks a lot Sabine! In 764, the Frankish Count Cancor founded Lorsch Abbey. It was a proprietary abbey, meaning that it was built on private grounds by a feudal lord, who also appointed the religious personnel. Cancor’s nephew, Chrodegang, became the first abbot here at Lorsch.

The Königshalle, the King’s Hall was added by King Ludwig the German in the 9thC.

It became a place of pilgrimage after obtaining the body of Saint Nazarius. For centuries, the monastery prospered. Then, through time fires, politics and wars happened. The abbey lost its privileges and gradually its standing.

The Abbey and Altenmünster of Lorsch became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991.
