The Church of St. Francis of Assisi, more commonly known as Igreja da Pampulha, is a chapel located in the Pampulha region in south-eastern Brazil.
It was designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer in the organic modern style and consists of four undulating concrete parabolas with outdoor mosaics and completed in 1943.
The church is classified as a UNESCO WHS since 2016 as part of the Pampulha Modern Ensemble, a collection of Niemeyer buildings in Pampulha.
Pampulha Modern Ensemble is built as a Garden City around an artificial lake.
This neighbourhood of Belo Horizonte was designed from 1940 on by architect Oscar Niemeyer and landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx. The ensemble included a casino, a restaurant/dance hall, a yacht club, a golf club and a church.
