GIBRALTAR ~ Gorham’s Cave Complex - UNESCO ~

... Great view of Gibraltar’s only WHS... a historical attraction about human history and an exceptional testimony to the traditions of Neanderthals... Gorham's Cave is one of numerous cave sites on the Rock of Gibraltar that were occupied by Neanderthals from about 45,000 years ago to perhaps as recently as 28,000 years ago... probably one of the the last known settlement of Neanderthals in Europe... it is one of a complex of four caves, all occupied when the sea level was much lower... some areas can be visited and numbers of visitors allowed may vary from time to time... all visits must be escorted by guides from the Gibraltar National Museum... there is also a viewing platform, more than 300 steps up... at this wonderfully scenic lookout one see the unique views of the entire WHS which extends to the highest point of the Rock at O'Hara's Battery, 426m, above sea level... with great matching UNESCO stamp👍... Hééééééél Erg Bedankt, Eric!!( ✿◠‿◠) for visiting here... sending me this lovely surprise and your nice comment about my blog, really appreciated ♥

Gorham's Cave is a sea-level cave in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar. The site is located on the Mediterranean side of the Rock of Gibraltar. When first inhabited, it would have been approximately 5 kilometres from the shore, but, due to changes in sea level, it is now only a few metres from the Mediterranean Sea.

The  caves that are not submerged by the sea contain archaeological deposits. In Gorham’s Cave, Vanguard Cave, Hyaena Cave and Bennett’s Cave traces of Neanderthal occupation have been found.
Some others have Early Modern Human deposits. The sites have been excavated since the 19th century, but only since 1989 the importance of the Gibraltar cave sites has been confirmed.

In 2016, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
