GHANA ~ Larabanga Mosque ~

... Another great card coming from Africa on behalf of Josep&Assumpta❤️... anyone can receive or send postcards from Ghana while providing support to the activities of The Prince & Princess Academy Project Team... a School Building Project: https://princeandprincessacadmy.com/... this postcard is showing one of the oldest mosques in West Africa and the oldest in Ghana... also one of the country’s most revered religious sites... built with mud and reeds... there are only eight mosques in the country built in this manner and has long been a pilgrimage site for Ghana’s Muslim population... these architectural styles, which have survived for centuries are a popular destination for tourists... Thanks a million!! (✿ ♥‿♥)

Larabanga is situated in the Northern Region of the country and close to the Mole National Park.

Believed to have been built by Moorish traders during the time of the trans-Saharan trade in the 13thC. The Mosque has two tall towers in a pyramid shape, one for the mihrab which faces towards Mecca, forming the facade on the east, and the other as a minaret in the northeast corner. These are buttressed by twelve bulbous shaped structures, which are fitted with timber elements. The Mosque has four entrances, one each for the village chief, men, women, and the muezzin, who leads the azan or prayer call.

This so-called God-built mosque in the Sudanese architectural style also houses a holy Quran (Koran) which also is believed to descend from heaven.
