TURKEY ~ Gobekli Tepe - UNESCO ~

... Great view of what is thought to be the world's oldest site of worship of significance created by human beings... that makes it one of the most important archaeological discoveries ever made... the construction at Göbekli Tepe dates back almost 12,000 years, placing it in a time period that is generally considered to be pre-civilization... it was built right around the same time that the last ice age ended... Göbekli Tepe then went on to be an active civilization for nearly three millennia before being abandoned under mysterious circumstances around 9,000 years ago... the site is enormous and only a small percentage has been excavated... only 4 circles are exposed in the main excavation site and there are supposed to be over 20 in total... tall rectangular limestone pillars are engraved with the shapes of animals and arranged in circular formations... these massive pillars, weighing several tons each, were carved before metal tools and pottery were developed.... an enormous roof has been constructed over the stones to preserve the carvings and to protect the archaeologists from the harsh sun...  Thanks a lot Selves!【ツ】
Gobekli Tepe is in the region of Eastern Anatolia, modern-day south east Turkey, only 50 kilometers from the border with Syria.

The neolithic archaeological ruins were first uncovered in the '60s. It was only when the site was rediscovered in 1994 that Göbekli Tepe’s true significance and most impressive traits - like its age, size, and construction quality - would be fully appreciated.

Gobekli Tepe dates back to 10,000 years before the founding of the Roman Empire, 8,000 years before the appearance of the Hittites, and 7,000 years before the Great Pyramids.”

In 2018, the site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
