GERMANY ~ Martin Luther - Herzog August Library - Wolfenbüttel ~

... Painting on wood of the German reformer Martin Luther by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1526) and housed in the Herzog August Library... he was the first and greatest figure in the 16th-century Reformation... to the present he has been a symbol of Protestantism... he became one of Western history’s most significant figures and his writings changed the course of religious and cultural history in the West... back in 2017 I also received two postcards with wonderful special postmarks about the Lutheran Reformation... this new one was used in Erfurt "Martin Luther's spiritual home town" to celebrate the introduction of the Reformation to the city in 1520... with a special version of the Luther stamp👍... it is from a booklet which also includes Germany's EUROPA stamp of 2017...Thanks a lot Dustin!! Martin Luther ( 1483 - 1546) was a German professor of theology, priest, composer, monk and a influential figure in the Protestant Reformation. Luther decided to become a monk, joining a Augustinian monastery in 1505. He made this decision as his life was spared when he was riding a horse during a violent thunderstorm. In 1514 Luther became priest for Wittenberg's City Church.

Martin Luther began to reject the principles of the established Roman Catholic Church. In October 1517, he nailed a paper containing 95 statements to the door of a church in Wittenberg.

He died aged 62, in Eisleben, the city of his birth. He was buried in the Castle Church in Wittenberg, beneath the pulpit.
