... First of at least 7 great German postcards waiting to shown... and all of them with wonderful postmarks from my dear postcard friend Dustin💙... nice view of one of the most beautiful castles in all of northern Germany... it is not only the second largest of its kind... but is also home to the only high Baroque state apartments of the country... the mighty four wings served the local dukes from the House of Brunswick-Lüneburg over 320 years as a residence... the castle’s heart and crown jewel is the castle museum... history comes alive and can be experienced in the state and private rooms of the ducal nobility... splendid chambers, precious silverware, finest robes and valuable paintings tell of the golden age of the Dukes... with sweet Easter postmark😊... Easter 2020, I believe, will always be remembered for the coronavirus...Thanks a lot Dustin!✿◕ ‿ ◕✿
Built as a moated castle on the Oker River at the time, it was the residence of the dukes of Braunschweig and Lüneburg for several centuries.
The castle was first mentioned in 1074. Nearly 200 years later, in 1255, it was destroyed for the first time. After 30 years, Duke Henry the Admirable had it rebuilt – the castle’s foundations, the moat and the lower parts of the castle tower with the castle dungeon are remnants of that rebuild which we see today.
