HUNGARY ~ Baradla Cave - Aggtelek National Park - UNESCO ~

... Great view of a true masterwork of nature... due to its length, activity and richness in cave formations. the Baradla Cave is the most remarkable cave not only in Hungary, but also in this entire temperate zone... it is one of the longest researched and visited for centuries.. natural entrances to the cave have been open from ancient times... the Aggtelek National Park is the only national park in Hungary that was established in order to first and foremost protect inanimate natural assets - karst formations and caves...  every type of cave-inhabiting animal can be found... nearly 20 bat species live here..  the surface disguises some 1200 caves, 280 of which can be found on the Hungarian side... you can visit the most spectacular ones on guided tours...with nice selection of stamps...Thanks Bori! The total territory of the national park is more than 20 000 ha and became a National Park in 1985. In the cave the average temperature is 10 °C, while relative humidity is 95-100%.

The Baradla Cave was formed some 200-230 million years ago in the Triassic Period, when this area was covered by water. Fossils of animals living in water were piled up forming limestone; in youngest rocks such fossils are still visible to the naked eye. The cave system of more than 25 km extend both beneath the surface of Hungary and Slovakia. (5.3 km long section is lying on the Slovakian side).

The Caves of the Aggtelek Karst and the Slovak Karst were declared part of the World Heritage by UNESCO in 1995.
