GERMANY ~ St. Mary's Church - Rostock ~

... Great view of Rostock's most important church... the biggest of three town churches in this Hanseatic city... and one of the largest brickstone Gothic buildings in the whole Baltic region... the church has precious furnishings, such as the oldest astronomical clock in Northern Germany still working with original parts (from 1472)... and a bronze baptismal font from 1290.... for more than 770 years, it has been a place of prayer, worship, meetings of civil or academic character... about 150.000 people visit this church every year... it is not a museum but a meeting place of a vital city parish and for the citizens of Rostock... with beautiful special postmark celebrating 100 year anniversary of the Bark "Seute Deern" a unique cargo ship... Thank you Dustin!【ツ】

The first reference to a church on this site is in 1232, which is thought to be the predecessor of the current building. It was enlarged and modified at the end of the 14thC into the present basilica.

The triple-nave cross-shaped basilica is in Brick Gothic, a building style typical of the Hanseatic port cities of northern Germany.

The huge tower with a baroque lantern at the top was not completed until the end of the18thC.
