El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest Service covering nearly 29,000 acres with peaks that rise up to 3000 ft. Its name is a reference to Yuke, what the indigenous Taíno people defined as "white lands".

Although one of the smallest in size, with an average rainfall of 120 inches a year it is one of the most biologically diverse of the national forests, hosting hundreds hosting animal and plant species, some of which are found only here, including the island’s famous coquí frog.
