Founded in 1844, the Zoo Berlin is the oldest zoo in Germany and the ninth oldest in the world. It covers an area of 35 hectares (86.5 acres) and is located in Berlin's Tiergarten. The aquarium opened in 1913.
With about 1,380 different species and with almost 20.000 animals the zoo presents one of the most comprehensive collection of species in the world.
The Elephant Gate, built 1899, with 2 life-size sandstone carved elephants supporting columns and an Oriental roof with East Asian paintings and carvings, at the entrance to Berlin Zoo, Tiergarten, Berlin. The current version is a replica of the 1899 original that was destroyed in WWII.
