Anawilundawa Wetland Bird Sanctuary is a national park located in the northwestern part of the island, about 100 km away from the capital Colombo and the area stretches over 1,397 hectares.
There are three totally different eco-systems. Brackish water wetlands with salty marshland and water gardens are complemented by a freshwater system of man-made tanks and canals, built in the 12th century. The adjoining coastal area with its sand dunes and beaches is the third eco-system creating this bird paradise.
Anawiludawa is home to more than 150 different types of birds. The fulvous whistling duck feeds in wetlands by day or night on seeds and other parts of plants.
