SRI LANKA ~ Bronze Elephant Lamp ~

Dedigama is world famous for its elephant lamp (11–12th C AD). This is a hanging lamp of a unique design with an oil regulating device. Oil can be poured into the belly of the elephant with the use of one of its front legs and the hollow. This unique archaeological exhibit, gives an insight into the advanced state of technological development during the reign of King Parakramabahu. The elephant lamp is an ingenious creation of an unknown craftsman.

Dedigama Kota Vehera stupa was built by king Parakramabahu the Great ( 1153-1186) as a memorial on the location he was born.
