Habarana is the centre of Sri Lanka's cultural triangle that is made up of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy. This small town serves as a base for Sigiriya and safaris to Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks.

The Median Egret is approximately 65cm  long with striking white plumage and mainly found around shallow inland freshwater areas with abundant emergent aquatic vegetation.

It feeds on grasshoppers, bluebottle flies, cicadas and other insects; also frogs, lizards, fish etc. Its nesting season is from November to March.
