TURKEY ~Ephesus - UNESCO (Tentative List)~

...I always like postcards showing ancient history...and this one is great example of it...views of the Celsus Library with a well preserved and  incredible facade! Thanks a lot Onder!!

With nice stamp.
Card showing: The Library of Celsus - The House of Love - The Library of Celsus, Statue of Arete.

Ephesus was once the trade centre of the ancient world, a religious centre of the early Christianity. It played a great role in the ancient times with its strategic location. Ephesus is located on a very fertile valley.

The Celcus Library is the most beautiful structure among the ruins in Ephesus. It was the third largest after Alexandria and Pergamon. Built by Galius Julius Aquila for his father, Celcus Polemaeanus, the grave of Celcus was beneath the ground floor, near the entrance with a statue of Athena over it.

Celcus Library was believed to have kept 12,000 scrolls at its peak. The external facade has 2-stories with Corinthian columns, 3 entrances and statues of Sophia (wisdom), Episteme (knowledge), Ennoia (intelligence) and Arete (valor).
