Created 1.2 billion years ago by faulting along the Canadian Shield and enlarged by erosion of the Agawa River, the Agawa Canyon is located 183 rail kms North West of Sault Ste. Marie. The park is situated between the Great Lakes and the Boreal Forest, with diverse representative flora from both regions in the canyon. Annual snowfall in the canyon exceeds 15 ft., with record snowfall of 25 ft. recorded during the winter of 1989. Four waterfalls dot the canyon’s rim and feed the Agawa River.
