Ferrara is situated in northeastern Emilia-Romagna region, northern Italy, in the middle of the Po Valley.
The Castello Estense (‘Este castle’) or castello di San Michele (‘St. Michael's castle’) is a moated medieval castle. A revolt by citizens of Ferrara in 1385 struck enough fear in the ruling Este duke that he constructed this massive brick fortress to protect himself and his family. It consists of a large block with four corner towers. Constructed primarily for defensive purposes towards the end of the 14thC, it later became the archetypal Italian Renaissance palace.
Ferrara, City of the Renaissance, and its Po Delta is a cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.
